Why family therapy?

We cannot avoid the reality of the impact of health in one person, be it physical illness or mental illness, affecting others in their life. The opposite is also true if the family is unwell (stressed by a number of factors) it will impact on each individual member of the family.

In terms of this and the imprint of families Paolo Freire (2000) states:

“No one ever goes anywhere alone….not even those who arrive physically alone, unaccompanied by family, spouse, children, parents, or siblings. No one leaves her or his world without having been transfixed by its roots or with a vacuum for a soul. We carry with us the memory of many fabrics. A self soaked in our history, our culture; a memory sometimes scattered, sometimes sharp and clear of the streets of our childhood, of our adolescence, the reminiscence of something distant that suddenly stands out before us, in us, a shy gesture, an open hand, a smile lost in a time of misunderstanding” (Paolo Freire, 2000)

Since we recognize the impact that families and past and present relationships have on us today, our aim is to support our clients develop a deeper level of understanding about the root and nature of the issue or conflict in order to be able to achieve acceptance and move forward to address it  and develop more positive, respectful and meaningful relationships.
